Malachite Kingfisher at Modimola Dam

The last two days have been pretty warmer and I was tempted to go out for some birding this afternoon.I saw this Malachite Kingfisher among some dry reeds waiting patiently for some fish or whatever.

  1. The colours of the Malachite Kingfisher is incredible. I was wondering why they call it Malachite. I know that Malachite is a greenish-like soft stone. Is it because of the colours on the head of the Kingfisher? Theo

  2. Hi Theo,
You are right. Malachite is a light to dark-green carbonate material containing copper and this is in reference to colour of the crown and forehead feathers. The bird is a beauty.Thanx for dropping-in again.
